to the essence of being

THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF IVAN HORVAT
Ivan Horvat was born in 1964 in Slovenia, then still Yugoslavia.
In his youth, he drew and painted a lot and occasionally wrote stories and poems.
His great role models were the surrealist Salvatore Dali and the writer Edgar Allan Poe.
He first came into contact with photography at the age of 20, at that time with a Canon AE1 program.
However, family and many other things got in the way and photography took a back seat.
Five years ago his wife passed away and since then he has been filling the gap with his newly discovered and revitalized creativity.
Initially working in classical nude photography, this soon no longer fulfilled him. He reflected on his beginnings and has since redirected his work in that direction.
Ivan is an extraordinary artist whose work transcends the boundaries of reality, drawing the viewer into a world of dreams and fantasies. His images possess a unique quality, stemming from his ability to use the camera as a tool to create an emotional connection with the viewer. He is not driven by the pursuit of the perfect shot but rather by the creation of images—visual paintings that ignite the viewer’s imagination. His work is fueled by a creative passion that compels him to tell stories and evoke moods.
A distinctive feature of Ivan’s work is his nude compositions, which he does not see as mere motifs but as symbols of authenticity, purity, and primal essence. In his nude imagery, the naked body serves as an expression of our connection to the origins of our being—a means of exploring and understanding the essence of existence. With the development of the “Poetic Nude”, Ivan expanded upon this principle, creating an entirely new artistic concept that unites photography and poetry. While the “Aesthetic Nudes” traditionally focuses on the beauty and perfection of the body, the “Poetic Nude” goes a step further: it does not use the naked body as an end in itself but as a medium to convey deeper emotions, narratives, and existential questions. Each image becomes a visual poem, encouraging reflection and taking the viewer on a journey into the depths of human existence sometimes accompanied by text, sometimes left open to inspire individual poetic interpretation.
Ultimately, Ivan is an artist who transcends the limits of photography, leading us into a world of emotions and dreams. In his search for the essence of being, for himself, and for his artistic style – a never-ending journey—the footprints he leaves behind are the images he creates!
