Love and desire are often perceived as opposing forces, especially in the two most widespread religions. Love is seen as something pure, desirable, while desire is regarded as something dirty, corrupt. Love is associated with heaven, while desire is attributed to hell. The truth, however, is that love and desire do not exclude each other; on the contrary – they are interdependent, much like Yin and Yang.
In popular culture, desire is often portrayed as a negative force that leads to immoral behavior. Yet, desire is a natural human craving that can enrich our lives. It can be a powerful motivator, driving us to seek pleasure and happiness, and can be a source of joy and excitement in our lives.
Love, on the other hand, is often linked to selflessness and sacrifice. While it’s true that love often involves placing others’ needs above our own, it’s also important to recognize that we cannot truly love others if we don’t love ourselves. Self-love is essential for healthy relationships, and it’s okay to be selfish sometimes to take care of our own needs. A “no” to someone else is a “yes” to oneself.
